Sick Baby

My sweet little guy is sick. Poor baby. He’s got a fever of 101.7 which isn’t that high for a 2 yr old, apparently but I know it can’t feel good. He’s got a nasty cough and his breathing is raspy. I took him in to the Doc in the Box and they gave him some cough medicine to help with the… well the cough I guess and the congestion that’s making it hard for him to breathe. I said “Say bye bye Jacky” as we left the doctor’s office and he said “Bye, bye Jacky” and gave a limp wave. He’s been so lethargic, but still has a hard time taking it easy.

I take comfort in the fact that little guys don’t do anything they don’t feel up to doing. I know he’s not going to push himself to get the Legos put together or make that last lap around the house on his big wheel.

When we got home from the doctor he refused to come in the house (this isn’t unusual at all, he never wants to come inside). But instead of doing his normal pulling of the sled around the driveway he wandered in circles humming to himself.

When Jack’s Daddy got home from getting his prescriptions (Daddy met us at the doctor’s office) he let Jack help park the car which is something he always does when Jack is outside as he’s driving up. Jack was beside himself with excitement while he sat on my DH’s lap for the whole 20 feet of driving it took to park.

He refused his favorite meal, a “butter” sandwich (peanut butter). “Don’t like it” he said and left it on the floor for the mutts. I’m pretty sure nothing tastes right to him with the cold and all. But it sure isn’t like him to not eat. The doctor said “He’s only a 2004 model? What have you been feeding him?” He is a big boy. 2’11” and 33 pounds 8 ounces and he’s 25 months old.

Anyway, I think I’m (as usual) having a harder time with him being sick than he is. We’re going to be just fine.

They are so cuddly when they don't feel good, but it is hard to enjoy, even knowing it will pass. I thought of him a lot today, in between meetings and parent-teacher conferences.
