Big Boy Bed

We had to buy a toddler bed for Jack because the bottom of his crib fell out this morning. We weren't going to buy him one because the crib turns into a toddler bed and we wanted to keep him in the crib as long as possible because then he can't get out of bed and mess around. He hadn't tried to climb out yet so we weren't even considering converting it. When the bottom fell out this morning I decided it was time. It seems the hole that one of the screws goes into is stripped so the screw slides in and out easily. Gramma says that we can put a "molly" in the hole and it will work again which is what we'll probably do if we ever have another child but for now we got a $40 toddler bed. It was the only one they had, except the "Dora the Explorer" one that came with other stuff and was $100. It's a nice little bed and I like the fact that we won't have to buy a new mattress for it since it takes the crib mattress.

It was a lot of work making his room "Jack Friendly" that is, making it safe for him to be in alone. I suppose most people would already have done that but since the room is so small and we have the front room pretty well Jack-proofed we never had him play in there. We took his Armoire out until we figure out a way to secure it to the wall so he can't pull it onto himself inadvertantly. I also took down his changing table, which we never used anyway except as shelving. I could just see him climbing up it. We put up the "Play yard" (otherwise known as a playpen)which he's slept in numerous times and it's ready to go in case he can't settle down and sleep in the bed and insists on getting up over and over. The instructions say not to put the bed closer than 12 inches to anything in case the child falls out so they won't get trapped. I can't really see that happening but I made sure it's not too close to the wall.

He got up and opened the door and went to tell his Daa-ie (Daddy in Jack)that he was "Done". I put the doorknob cover on the inside of the room because I don't want him out wandering the house when we're asleep. We have the baby monitor in there so I'll be able to hear when he gets up but right now its safer for him to be alone in his room than anywhere else in the house. It sounds like he's settled down now. We haven't heard anything in awhile so I think I'll go check on him.

So does this mean Jack has to get a big bed when he's like 3 or 4? Sorry Cassie, i guess i'm trying to figure out the size LOL!!

Hi Michelle,
You're right. Toddler beds tend to be the same size as a crib, but lower to the floor, and without the bars. Jack can get in and out of this bed himself, as it has a partial railing on the side, rather than the tall, enclosed side. For the money, it's a good way to go right now, until they can afford a "real" bed for him, or he outgrows this one.

With a real bed we would have to buy a real mattress, the toddler bed uses the crib mattress so it ends up being a lot cheaper. A regular twin bed would be a lot higher up too so it works for now. At least until he's 50 pounds... we have at least a few months to get a twin bed, lol!
